Have mercy on me,
Lord, for I am weak; Heal me, O Lord, for my bones are troubled. Psalm 6.2
It's so hard when the
heart is sad, embittered, feeling abandoned. If we see ourselves inside a vial
of sadness and disappointment, it seems that nothing is capable of producing
joy and satisfaction.
The Bible narrates
facts like this: Jonah from the womb of the great fish was a man frustrated
with life; Elijah of Mount Horeb was a man without hope and fear; The disciples
felt lost, unmotivated, and abandoned at the death of Jesus; Martha and Mary
were devastated by the death of Lazarus.
The Lord Jesus
himself faced the pain, the sadness, the abandonment as he walked on this
earth. Sometimes he cried with the suffering of his neighbor; others, he
stretched out his hand to help those who suffered, and sometimes he was
wronged, attacked, persecuted.
In fact, sadness is
necessary to life. Not only because it teaches us the true value of joy, but
because it reveals to us that we need to be careful about our plans and
actions. Joy is an achievement and a blessing.
The psalmist teaches
us that however clever and blessed we are, we still need God every day. We can
never forget that we are weak and that here and there we need healing for our
ills.
