"And the peace
of God ... shall keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians
4: 7
The afflicting heart
pays a high price for this. Affliction comes from the Greek word for
"dividing the mind." Anxiety divides us right in the middle, creating
a split-minded thinker. In addition to tackling tomorrow's problem, distress
cancels out the strength of today. Perception is divided, wasting your energy.
Who can afford to lose power?
But how can we stop
doing this? Paul offers a two-sided answer: God's part and our part. Our part
includes prayer and gratitude. "Do not be anxious for anything, but in
everything by prayer and supplication and with thanksgiving present your
requests to God" (Philippians 4: 6).
God's part? "If
you do this, you will experience the peace of God, which is far more wonderful
than the human mind can understand"
For God is not the
God of confusion, but of peace, 1 Corinthians 14: 33a
