David knew that alliances with other kings
could strengthen his government. However, he learned that if decisive support
always came from God. Hence his Psalm: "Wait on the Lord, be of good
cheer, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait thou in the Lord" (Psalm
27:14).
Reality teaches us that in social life we
depend on each other. But it also teaches that human help is precarious. And
sometimes dangerous. It is not just enemies who seek to harm us. What hurts us
most is the betrayal of our friends, when we need more support. Betrayal
produces deep havoc.
The help of God is always within our reach.
The obstacle to the Lord's action lies in ourselves, in our fear of
surrendering to His lordship. Therefore, David repeats, "Wait on the
Lord." Our fears weaken our faith. Yet when we throw ourselves into the
Lord's arms, little by little, we realize His power, His ability to deliver us
from the dangers. We are not condemned to despair. Experiencing divine
solutions strengthens our heart.
"Strive ye, and he shall strengthen your
heart, all ye that hope in the Lord." Psalm 31:24
