"Some
trust in chariots and some in horses, but we will make mention of the name of
the Lord our God." - Psalm 20: 7
Impressive are
the news we receive every day about new technologies. In the universe of
microcomputers we see faster and faster processors, information storage chips
with greater capacity and reduced size. The application of new technologies in
areas such as medicine and genetic engineering fill the world of hope with
regard to newer, less invasive treatments and cure of hitherto incurable
diseases.
Not just
technological prosperity but plenty of other resources can make the man feel
self-sufficient. Why do we need God if we have so much technology? Some may be
tempted to think.
The tendency
of man to look at himself and to forget God at the moment of prosperity is very
great. Only those who have daily fellowship with the Lord are aware of their
continued dependence.
To paraphrase
the psalmist today we can say: Some rely on technology, others rely on money,
others rely on their personal capacities, but we recognize that who makes the
difference in our lives is the Lord.
Prayer:
Beloved God. It helps me to feel the need for you just as I need the air to
breathe. I thank you for the innumerable blessings and facilities that the Lord
has bestowed upon me, but often these resources turn my eyes from the Lord,
causing me to trust them too much. May my eyes always be upon you in all
circumstances. In the name of Jesus I ask you. Amen.
