"Submit
yourselves therefore to God; but resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
"- James 4: 7
There are many
sincere, dedicated and faithful Christians who are often defeated successively
in the face of the temptations of the enemy. The great desire of these people
is to overcome the temptation, but when it comes ... It can not resist.
In the book of James
we find a two-step procedure to overcome the Devil. The first step is to submit
to God. The second is to resist the Devil. The consequence is that the Devil
will flee from us.
The great problem in
applying this procedure is that Christians place emphasis on the second step,
resist the devil, and give less importance to the first, subjection to God. It
is unbelievable how tempted we are to turn our focus to the Devil. There is
much talk about him and he forgets the most important: our subjection to God.
At the moment of
temptation our first step should be subjection to God. We should pray to the
Father in this way:
Prayer: Lord. On this
day I want to be a faithful servant and submissive to His sovereign will. As a
servant I am at your command to do whatever the Lord wants me to do. May every
second of this new day I be completely submissive to You. That in no moment by
a word, action or thought I come to contradict your sovereign will. Help me
also to resist the enemy. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
