"Love not the world, neither the
things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the Father's love is
not in him. " 1 John 2:15
The Bible uses the term "world" in
more than one meaning: one of them is used as the human posture of rejection of
God's lordship. It is in this context that John warns us: "Do not love the
world, nor the things that are in it. If you love the world, you do not love
God the Father "(1 John 2:15).
We were created by God with the ability and
need to love. The object of our love is our decision. "Loving the
world" is the equivalent of loving things and people who have assumed
spiritual self-reliance and therefore declare themselves uninvolved with the
Lord's bountiful posture. By restricting their love to themselves, such people
reject any commitment to the Father.
In His dialogue with Nicodemus, Jesus used
the term "world" as the equivalent of His Father's creative work:
"God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whosoever believeth
in Him should not die, but have life eternal "(John 3:16). Our mission,
therefore, is not to love the world that rejects God, but to love the world
that needs the Lord.
