"If ye are risen with Christ, seek
ye the things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of
God." Colossians 3: 1
When an individual receives the gospel of the
Lord Jesus and accepts the gift of eternal life, we say that there has been a
conversion. Conversion is compared to a resurrection. It is as if the old
individual were dying and another person was born. What is expected of this new
individual? A completely new life and guided by the Spirit of God.
Unfortunately, however, the vast majority of
those who profess Christianity demonstrate attitudes very similar to those of
the old individual. Why does it happen?
Many who have been resurrected unfortunately
do not "seek the things that are above," but are in a constant and
intense search for the things that are down here.
There is in the heart of every Christian a
great desire to be like Jesus, yet this desire is confronted by an equally
great disappointment of not being like Jesus; moreover, we often have the
impression that we are far from our Model. Why are not we like Jesus? We simply
do not look for things up there with the same intensity that we seek the things
below.
My friend. My appeal is that on this day you
dedicate yourself to seeking things from above. Seek the peace of God, seek to
be meek, seek to be merciful and understanding with the failings of others,
seek to have an open heart to forgive.
Prayer: Dear Father. I am so involved with
the things of this world that I find it difficult to seek the things above. I
consider myself a Christian - a new being transformed by you. But sometimes I
do not even look like a Christian. Help me to look up from above with devotion.
Help me not to be distracted and seduced by things down here. That's what I'm
asking you in the name of Jesus. Amen.
