"He does not treat us according to
our sins, nor reward us according to our iniquities" (Psalm 103: 10).
Sometimes when people ask how I am, I
respond, "I'm better than I deserve." I remember a well-intentioned
person saying, "No, you deserve a lot!", And I replied to her,
"Not really." I was thinking about what I really deserve - the
judgment of God.
We forget very easily how much we are
sinners, even in the depths of our being. To judge ourselves better than we
should lower in our consciousness the deep debt we owe to God for His grace.
Decrease the price paid for our redemption.
It's time to review reality! As the psalmist
reminds us, God "does not treat us according to our sins, nor reward us
according to our iniquities" (Psalm 103: 10). Considering who we are in
the light of a holy and just God, the only thing we truly deserve is hell. And
eternity is an absolute impossibility - except for the gift of the sacrifice of
Christ on the cross.
If God ever does anything but redeem us, He
will have done much more than we deserve. It is not surprising that the
psalmist says, "For as the heavens rise above the earth, so great is His
mercy toward them that fear Him" (Psalm 103: 11).
Knowing ourselves for what we are can not
help but say, "The eternal grace that has come to set us free! He gives us
much more than we deserve "
