"The heart of a man plans his way,
but the LORD directs his steps." Proverbs 16: 9
"In his heart man plans his way - but
the Lord determines the steps of man" (Proverbs 16: 9). In this verse, the
author of Proverbs describes the inner struggle of all who long to live
according to the will of the Lord.
There is a big difference between choosing
the primary goal of our life and determining, each day, the proper direction to
stay on the right path. Little deviations, when they are not perceived and
corrected, eventually cause great correction efforts. Therefore, the text of
Proverbs does not recommend our fantasy of "autopilot".
As disciples of Christ, we can count on His
direction in each of our steps - as long as, of course, we take seriously the
compass that the Holy Spirit places within us. Jesus teaches us that obeying
His guidance means a "narrow way" that, however, guarantees eternal
life (Matthew 7:14). The Lord guides our steps.
