"Then the apostles said unto the Lord,
Increase our faith." Luke 17: 5
It is interesting to note this request of the
apostles, "increase our faith," and I say this because they were with
the Lord Jesus, they heard from His mouth His teachings, walked with Him, and
lived side by side with the Lord of the heavens and of the earth, but before
Him, at that moment, they asked the Lord: "Increase our faith."
All right, it is clear in Scripture that
faith has no relation to seeing, but believing, as it is written in Hebrews 11:
1, faith is the assurance of what we hope for, and the proof of things we do
not see. It is not necessary to see to believe, but from the first time I read
this text I was reflecting on this request of the apostles, I from the beginning
of the walk thought that there were no people who had more faith than those
men, because they lived and saw everything what the Lord Jesus did, of course,
I thought this before I knew the gallery of the heroes of faith that is also in
Hebrews 11, where we find people who were true examples of faith, even without
having the living example of the Lord Jesus to follow. However, even among
these great examples of faith, I think that at some point, in some situation,
in their hearts they asked the Father: "increase our faith."
Hebrews 11 also tells us, in verse 6, that
without faith it is impossible to please God, for those who approach Him need
to believe that He exists. Faith is the basis of Christianity, can not be a
true Christian without faith, and by faith I do not mean to repeat a prayer in
Sunday worship, not even, faith is more than that. Faith is to seek to live in
dependence on His lordship. I myself, in various situations of my life,
especially in the face of a great tragedy, have asked myself: Do I really have
faith? Perhaps you have already asked yourself this, doubted the size of your
faith, or your steadfastness, and perhaps you have even doubted the existence
of the God of the Bible. I do not know what your doubts and fears have been (or
are), but I know that God exists and lives. That when faced with the
adversities of life, when our faith falters, or even when we stand and stand,
we can all ask our God, "Lord, increase my faith."
May our faith be greater and more firm to
each, to the glory of the Lord Jesus. Amen!
