"Blessed are they that mourn: for they
shall be comforted." Matthew 5: 4
In His preaching known as the Sermon on the
Mount, Jesus redefined some of the most popular religious concepts: among them,
happiness. For example, "Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be
comforted" (Matthew 5: 4).
Crying is a powerful expression, not only of
feelings but also of mature convictions. Certain injustices lead to intense
crying. Anger causes tears with clenched teeth. We cry when our pain is deep.
And even we cry with joy ... As the Lord respects our tears, His Spirit is
always available, giving us the comfort in the right measure we need.
There are people who decide not to cry. Some,
because they are proud: for them, crying is a sign of weakness. There are
those, for those who cry is a demagogic conduct, excellent for easy compassion
and easy help. But it is the definition given by Jesus that dignifies the
crying. In the context of the "beatitudes" weeping is a serious
thing, fruit of spiritual maturity. Therefore, the Gospels record only two
occasions in which "Jesus wept": John 11:35, seeing Martha and Mary
dismayed by the death of Lazarus; when beholding Jerusalem and moved by the
unbelief of its inhabitants. It is in this cry, typical of the intensity of the
one who cultivates empathy, who receives the consolation and strengthening
given by the Lord.
