In the sermon in which he teaches us how to be
spiritually dependent on the Father and the Son, Jesus says, "As the
Father has loved me, so have I loved you: abide in My love" (John 15: 9).
In speaking of love, Jesus never referred to
strong emotions or intense feelings. To love, according to Jesus, is to obey
His commandments: "If you obey My commandments, you will abide in My love,
just as I have obeyed My Father's commandments and abide in His love"
(John 15:10).
To love Christ is to obey His commandments. And
His commandments, where can we find them? In the Bible. Presenting ourselves as
"the bread of life" (John 6:35), Jesus emphasized our need for daily
fellowship with Him. So the more we feed on the biblical teachings, the more
spiritual health we develop. We are called to abide in His love. Therefore, we
are called to obey His commandments. The Christian life, therefore, is the
daily exercise of the love of Christ. And the daily obedience of His
commandments.
