"Have not I told
you so? Be strong and of good courage; fear not, neither be dismayed; for the
Lord thy God is with thee, whithersoever thou goest. " Joshua 1: 9
Joshua's life was
marked by much struggle, not only that of Joshua, but that of all the Hebrew
people who migrated from Egypt to the Promised Land. Joshua would need some
encouraging words and God did. Moses was dead, and the lack of a ready
substitute and the time to continue leading the people to the promised land was
a point of doubt for the Hebrew people. But when we look at God's relational
history with his people, from the time of his departure from Egypt to the
possession of the promised land, we see a history of care-God had preserved,
sustained, and miraculously manifested to this people.
And Joshua not only
knew this as testifying of this care of God (it was easier to be encouraged by
such words). It is only possible to be encouraged with such words when one
knows the efficacy of the one who spoke them, Joshua had already proved the
efficacy and beneficence of God. And trusting in God's care, which he had
tasted throughout his life history, ended his life in a noble and victorious
way. God's care is what he did in the past, he does in the present and will
make the difference in the future. Therefore be strong and of good courage, for
God careth for you.
