"Immediately
the boy's father, crying, tears, he said: Lord, I believe! help my unbelief.
" Mark 9:24
Afflicted, a
father begged Jesus to heal his son. When the Master asked him? "Thou
canst believe," the father made one of the most profound statements of
faith: "Lord, I believe! Help my unbelief "(Mark 9:24).
The Bible does
not teach what some preachers call "blind faith." It also does not
teach faith based on ignorance. Faith that research that question, seeking
help, not as adjectival disbelief.
The honest
disbelief and open to the experience is the raw material of faith.
Unbelief
surrender to Jesus as a request for assistance is already in itself a belief
statement.
When I declare
my unbelief to Jesus and ask Him to help me, I'm practicing the most difficult
exercise in faith. I believe because I know, for myself, I can not get it. I
believe because, looking at Jesus, I find the size of disbelief that I give
Him.
"And Jesus
said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that
believeth." Mark 9:23
