"And this is his commandment, that we
believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another according to
his commandment." 1 John 3:23
In his first letter John reveals to us the
secret of spiritual health: "This is his commandment, that we believe in
the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another" (1 John 3:23).
As we understand it, in the revelation made
in the first book of John, there is an essential interrelation between
believing and loving. Believing in someone means not being afraid of someone: it
means not having to be alert for self-defense.
Therefore the apostle states: “Beloved, let
us love one another; because love is of God; and whoever loves is born of God
and knows God.
He who does not love does not know God;
because God is love ”.
(1 John 4: 7,8). It is within this biblical
context that Paul, in the midst of various affirmations, teaches us, "And
above all, have love, for love unites all things perfectly" (Colossians
3:14).
