"Take my yoke upon
you and learn from me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and you will find rest
for your souls: for my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." (Matthew 11:
29-30)In Matthew 11, Jesus
invites us to take His yoke, to learn from Him, and to rest. He is telling us
there is more; Your invitation to rest is a package. If we are true followers
of Jesus Christ, let us take His yoke upon us. But what does it mean? The concept of yoke (or
"canga" in the original translation) was easily understood by people
of the time of Jesus. Canga was a steering device placed on animals to guide
the plows or carts that were pulled. Jesus, in essence, says,
"Take my
steering device (or my canga) over you." He says, "Let me be in
control of your life. Let me guide your life. Let me direct your life."You may think, "First, Jesus says you're going to give me some rest, now tell me to put on your canga and to learn. We must understand that He is going to be as much weight to us as the wings are to a bird. It will be a joy, because now, instead of wasting your life serving yourself, living for pleasure and for success or anything else for which you live in the world, you will channel your energies to follow and serve the Jesus Christ. You may even have to give up some things to follow the Lord, but nothing compares to what He is going to give you. This is not just a big thing to do with your life; But rather the most rewarding thing you can do with your life.
